Based on an 1897 Browning patent, this is the first of the Colt high powered semi-automatic pistols. Introduced in 1900, approximately 3000 of the first model were made. Some will have military US or USN markings. In 1902 the model was changed to have a round hammer and new sights. In 1903 the pocket model was introduced and manufactured until 1927. This model shows an evolution from the stub to spur hammer, and an improvement of the finger grooves on the slide. These guns should not be fired with .38 super ammunition.

The only safety device on the basic model was a floating firing pin. Samples were submitted with and without lanyard loop, stub and spur hammer, with and without grip safety, and with and without cartridge indicator. Some were cut for a combination shoulder stock and holster, now rare collector’s items.

Basic American military sidearm adopted in March 1911. In the early 1920s the models changed to 1911a1. Noticeable changes were a longer hammer spur, a longer tang on the safety, a slightly longer trigger with a relief cut for the trigger finger, a widened front sight, and an arched mainspring housing. All parts are interchangeable. During the war times, contracts for manufacture were given to Caron Brothers, Canada, North American Arms Co., Canada, Singer Sewing Machine, Union Switch and Signal, Ithaca Gun Co., Colt, and Remington Rand. Remington Rand appears to have been the largest producer, over a million units from 1942 to 1945. Production for the civilian market had a C preceding the serial number. In 1933 a variation called the National Match was produced, hand fitted and tested with tighter tolerances and adjustable sights. This model was discontinued during WW II, but reappeared in 1957 as the Gold Cup model. In 1949, an alloy receiver model was introduced as the Commander. Weighing 26.5 oz., It had a barrel 3/4″ shorter, and a rounded hollow hammer. All models use the same magazines. The magazines also fit the Argentine, Chinese and American copies. Production totals appear to exceed 3,000,000 units.

Made by Colt, using Browning patents, from 1903 to 1945. The first issue ended with serial number 72,000 in 1911. The second issue differed from the first in that the barrel length was reduced from 4 inches to 3 3/4 inches. This series ended in 1926 at serial number 105050. The third model ended with serial number 572215 and differed from the first two in that it had no barrel bushing, and from number 414896 forward a magazine safety disconnector was added. Both calibers were discontinued in 1945. Widely distributed throughout the world, many were purchased by the United States, the British, and the Chinese governments. Almost 900,000 of the two calibers were produced.

OVERALL LENGTH – VARIES

Most specimens encountered show excellent workmanship in fit and finish. First made in .32 caliber in 1912, the .380 caliber was first made in 1916. Designed from a British patent. The pistol was used in the Hungarian service.

Designed by John D. Pederson and patented in 1915, this pistol was designed with a device which lessened recoil. Production of the .380 began in 1919 and stopped in 1927, though sales continued through 1934. The .32 caliber was produced from 1922 through 1927; sales also ended in 1934. Very well made with three safeties: thumb, grip and magazine. The pistol fits the hand well and is pleasant to fire. Both calibers are identical; changes were made in inscription on the slide and in finger grip serrations during production. Total production appears to have been about 75,000, of which 50,000 were 380s. An extremely high quality pistol.

First introduced in 1913 without a model designation, this pistol became known as the 1913 Model, 1914 Model and Old Model. The breech block is housed in a tube, a unique design at the time. This is a reliable and well made pistol that has stood the test of time. Prized by shooters and collectors, it was discontinued because of design advances by the maker. Many of the features are patented Sauer designs, including assembly cap on the slide lock with rear sight catch. The late model has a fixed rear sight blade on top of the slide.

First produced commercially in the mid 1930’s, this pistol was used during WWII as a substitute German standard pistol, primarily by the air forces. Quality deteriorated during the war. The “H” stands for hahn or hammer, indicating a self-cocking pistol. Similar to the Walther PP in takedown. This model was also made in 380 and 25 ACP, but these are comparatively rare. The 32 ACP was also made with an aluminum slide, weighing 19 oz., but this model is not often seen. A well designed and machined pistol with very advanced but simple double action features, including a thumb lever which permits raising and lowering the hammer without snapping the trigger. Production stopped at the end of WWII and the pistol was not revived commercially.

ORIGIN – GERMANY
CALIBER – .32 ACP
WEIGHT – 26 OZ.
OVERALL LENGTH – 6.25″
LENGTH OF MAGAZINE – 3.8″
First produced commercially in the mid 1930s, this pistol was used during WW II as a substitute German standard military pistol, primarily by the air forces. Quality deteriorated during the war. The “H” stands for hahn or hammer, indicating a self-cocking pistol. Similar to the Walther PP in takedown. This model was also made in .380 and .25 ACP, but these are comparatively rare. The .32 ACP was also made with an aluminum slide, weighing 19 oz., but this model is not often seen. A well designed and machined pistol with very advanced but simple double action features, including a thumb lever which permits raising and lowering the hammer without snapping the trigger. Production stopped at the end of WW II and the pistol was not revived commercially. This mag is an extended mag that sticks out from the bottom of the grip frame.

Improved and modernized 1914 or old model Sauer. The major design change was in the shape of the grip, allowing for a better hold. Manufactured for commercial sale and police use, this pistol was not officially used by the German military, but was used by many police departments and by German military officers. It was an official Dutch police pistol. Well machined, well fit and finished. Some were made with an alloy slide, reducing the weight to 15 oz. Production ceased in 1937.

This pistol was introduced in 1913 to give Colt and Savage some competition in the pocket pistol field. Although a well made and beautifully finished pistol, it was not a serious threat because of the proprietary cartridge it used. The U.S. patent rights were purchased from the Belgian designer, Charles P. Clement. The pistol was discontinued in 1921 and the ammunition was discontinued in 1940. The pistol can be fired with .32 ACP ammo, though the bullet diameter is too small for seating in the barrel grooves, making it inaccurate and causing jams.
